There isn't one president in our lifetime that won't have clouds over his historical legacy due to the requirements of the job. Those over President HW Bush's historical legacy have been hashed out.

The man who gave voted against the Civil Rights Act, gave us Willie Horton, appointed Clarence Thomas, and was indifferent to the AIDS crisis also presided competently over the end of the Cold War and broke his own political promise over taxes to provide the foundation for new economic growth. That's his historical legacy.

His personal legacy overall is one of a good family man who was decent to his allies and rivals alike. A person who stands even taller when measured against the current occupant at 1600 PA Ave.

Historical revisionism. Not balancing one's record with the societal norms of the times is a flawed assessment of an individual as president. Here's the rest of the story...in 2013 Pres. Bush served as an official witness at the marriage of a lesbian couple in Kennebunkport, Maine. He told his biographer about this event, "Personally, I still believe in traditional marriage. But people should be able to do what they want to do, without discrimination. People have a right to be happy. I guess you could say I have mellowed."

And once again, you're ignoring the distinction between historical legacy and personal legacy.

That personal act of grace and awareness in the last years of his life will be an interesting footnote in the histories written about him.

But it's facile to think that it serves as some sort of redemptive act in the eyes of history, which will focus more on what he did -- or failed to do -- when he was the Most Powerful Man In The World, not decades after.

Then I guess today is a day for facileness. I'm ignoring nothing. He made enormous strides in one term...who knows what would have happened in a second term. I would not call it a redemptive act, it was the same awareness many came to embrace. It is called personal growth...the quality to be able to admit one's mistakes and change one's views as a result. Humility...something sadly missing in much of today's society. How do you want to be remembered? When all is said and done, to be remembered the way he was today is what is most important.
Beautiful and touching service. RIP 41.
peace

Melania always looks like a beautiful wax museum figure to me. Trump was squirming a lot. Wonder how much of all that he actually heard while he was thinking about himself?

haha, there's a very old church on my block. I like the tolling now but it took some getting used to. Meta gothic. It's a good way to know what time it is. cool

I believe that is the protocol at any event where the Presidents attend- that they sit in order, and the First Ladies sit next to the previous President. That's why Michelle Obama said that she and W became so friendly, because they always sit next to each other at these events.

Having said that, I wonder how the Trumps felt sitting in such close proximity at this event with the Obamas and the Clintons, who Trump continues to malign.

The protocol makes sense, interesting.

From the looks of it Trump was uncomfortable. Way too dignified for his behavior MO. Bet he bows out of a lot of group stuff in the future, just like the Kennedy Center Honors. Travesty.

True about the protocol. Trump was very uncomfortable. Obama didn’t look to pleased sitting next to them at all. He talks so much bull about past presidents, but you could tell he felt their not-so-pleased vibe of his presence.

Notice that Bill Clinton glanced once at Trump, while Hillary Clinton just stared straight ahead stone faced, completely ignoring that Trump was even there.

From the Washington Post :

"Trump was in the company of all his living predecessors for the first time Wednesday, and the encounter was plainly uncomfortable. By 10:49 a.m., when Trump and first lady Melania Trump stepped into the cathedral, a cool hush had come over the pews filled by American dignitaries and foreign leaders, past and present. Trump handed his black overcoat to a military aide and took his seat on the aisle next to his wife, with three past presidents and first ladies seated to her side.

First was the president Trump said was illegitimate (Barack Obama); then the first lady he called a profligate spender of taxpayer dollars (Michelle Obama); then the president he called the worst abuser of women (Bill Clinton); then the first lady and secretary of state he said should be in jail (Hillary Clinton); and then the president he said was the second-worstbehind Obama (Jimmy Carter) and his wife, Rosalynn.

The Trumps and the Obamas greeted each other brusquely, but only Melania Trump reached over to shake hands with Bill Clinton. Hillary Clinton did not acknowledge the Trumps, keeping her gaze straight ahead as if determined not to make eye contact with the man who continues, two years after the 2016 election, to inspire “Lock her up!” chants at his rallies"

I thought the service was very moving.

I think Trump kept himself in check and I think he did the right thing with Airforce 1 and providing it to the family, and the Blair House.

Trump didn't want to be there, and I don't think they really wanted to have to invite him but they did.

None of those presidents in that front row were or are perfect, but, they were able to put their political differences aside for a moment to honor a man that spent only four years as a president, and ninety years as just a good man. Too bad we can't all do the same.

The Houston service has been beautiful.

There is an unprecedented 21-aircraft flyover scheduled for this afternoon in Bush's final resting place at his presidential library in College Station, Texas. I'm hoping it flies close enough to our office here in west Houston to see it.

The train is cool too. Must be nice to just ask for a train and get an engine already named after him painted in the colors of Air Force One, geesh.

Except that all of Trump's predecessors all with their flaws and good and bad, seemed like they genuinely wanted to serve their country. Trump does not care about the American public - he only cares about himself. He doesn't deserve to be in their company, IMO. He seemed bored with the service because it was not one iota about him.
