WOW . . . not trying to be offensive to anyone here either but she was the original Prince Girl. She was the prototype. She was the original and the best. She is no afterthought. I do think some wish she and her memory would go away but as times go on I think her legend will grow.

I realize in the Purple Circle there will always be resentment of Vanity and her influence, place in Prince's public history and personal especially since he died right after her but you cannot deny when he was with her he was white hot. She clearly was a great inspiration at the time. Nothing he ever did compares to what he did during that time commercially. (Please do not drag me for that blame that on the masses). For a while Prince and Vanity had the public 's imagination. Yes, Apples did the movie but she never reached the imagination as Vanity did- neither did Sheila- I am not speaking Prince fans I am speaking in general.

I know I will dragged but I understand his mates ignoring her and discounting her especially now since he died they can rewrite history as they want it.

Do not pay any attention. Certain people like spouting nonsense. He got a separate bus for himself and his ladyfriend and certain bitches in his band were pissed. Take a good look at the success rate of Dez Dickerson as a musician at least Vantiy did get to act a bit and have a carreer.

You are right Laura

I do think some of that resentment traveled all the way to present day. It is true her career, short as it was speaks for itself.

You have to address what I actually said though. But you cannot do that if you are overly emotional or hysterical about it. Being calm and detached helps with reasoning.

I specifically said "singing and playing ability". The comparison stopped there.

Vanity was and still is the most beautiful and charismatic of Prince's proteges, which I was not disputing so there's no need to get defensive. lol

Her stock in Princeworld would have risen much higher IF she had remained to star in Purple Rain like she should have done. It would have been even more of a classic because she and Prince had that firey chemistry that could not be duplicated with an actress as mediocre as Apollonia.

Vanity was a pretty decent actress and that would have made her an asset to the Prince camp that Dez or anybody else couldn't dispute.

wave Have I been hysterical or emotional.? . . . .

I stated my opinion on the women named.

Vanity was not worried about her stock in the Princeoworld or she would have never left. She had been working at her dream since a 17 year old kid. Apples was in Purple Rain and never hit as Vanity did outside the camp.

However if there are outtakes of filming done before she left I would love to see it.

[Edited 6/18/17 16:50pm]

No worries. Just clarifying. folks get rather testy in this forum when observations are made about one of their faves. They take critique of their favorite associate personally and pounce on anyone who gives an objective opinion. We had a thread about it. lol

Apologies if I misjudged your comment.

--I kind of think it was unreasonable. This is the entertainment industry. Even today looks are more important to your success than your actual talent. This is not right but this is the entertainment industry which is shallow to begin with. In addition, she was his girlfriend why would he not want to be alone with her? Also Prince did go on to work with very talented musicians.

Sooo, P wanting to spend private time with his girlfriend was a problem?

I liked V and Matt made a point about P spending time with...modestly talented gals he was wooing...but whatever...The bands, all of them were acting like he was their private property.

Ok, so P had a penchant for pretty, humbly talented gals...So?

W&L had each other, and I'm guessing the rest had significant others...

P simply was trying to have a romantic life...Sheesh

Prince did have many protoges. Vanity was not like the others though. She was beautiful, not he greatest singer ut she had something the others did not have.

Vanity was wooed from the Prince camp by big names in Hollywood. Martin Scorcese, Barry Gordy, Spielberg, etc. She had that IT factor. By the time she crossed paths with Prince she had already modeled overseas, did playboy, and made 2 movies.

She left P's camp made more movies, 3 albums

None of his"other pretty , humbly talented" Protoges had her success. She was a trailblazer, wearing laced gloves and strategically covered gowns/clothes before Madonna, Britney, & JLO.

Granted Prince gave her a stage to be seen but he did thtat with many people over the years . However, she took full advantage and did not go about pimping the Prince connection for her income. Never dragged Prince or the women with him publicly, never ever blamed her time with Prince for any of her problems, never inserted herself as more important than she was to Prince and went on to make a difference in the world as preaching the Word of God.

She cannot be thrown in with the other women she was in a totally different sphere.

I agree,

Prince should have formed a backing band for Vanity 6 and let them have at it

Dez has talent for sure but what he lacks Vanity owns and that is Charisma

Sheila E is another huge talent, but she never had the charisma Vanity had from 1984-1986

it took Sheila E a while to develop what Vanity had naturally.

That is why when U C her first walk through that door in the Nasty Girls video it is all over.
That is why that cover of the Rolling Stones Magazine is till one of the most popular

She killed it with one song. One video. I don't think people even realize that's how much of an impact she made.

Yeah, both were very profitable for Prince. I mean I think Vanity 6 as entertainers were formidable too. I think that is why 1982-83 was such a high purple time too

Both were going to bring Prince high status if he handled them better. And as we see by 1984 it didn't go so well as a result.

I have a bunch of pictures from the Time 1981-1983 and Vanity 6 1982-1983 and for every photo of Morris Day or the Time there are about 5-7 of Vanity 6. Vanity 6 album cover photos/lp sleaves were more creative too. And the Time only had 2 videos Cool and the Walk

Interesting info but I think the Time were a tight band and so, so good. Vanity 6 - their album was good and better the pop music we have now just not the same caliber as The Time. Prince was way ahead of his time.

I never thought he ignored The Time for Vanity 6. Interesting discussion. Did you see the Triple Threat Tour?

No I don't think he ignored them for Vanity 6. I just see the promotion for Vanity 6 was 7 times higher for them over the Time. As well as on some shows removing the Time from the set list and just having them play behind Vanity 6.

Yes I saw all 3 during the 1999 tour. Great show.

Typical blame the woman BS. There are dynamics in bands. There are dynamics amongst lovers. The band mates have each other. The leaders of a band have to keep some distance; other wise they are not leaders of a band. He was promoting her career at the time. The Revolution members were already on videos and album covers. . MOst human beings or studio musicans for that matter don't get solos in hit songs and to be in music videos.

Bandmates want their cake and to eat it too often. They want the attention Prince gets for all their hard work but they don't want the pressure, instability, and scrutiny that goes with it. The reality is that anyone of them could have attempted a solo career like Prince did before and after them. If it didn't work out for them so be it. According to Dez, he was a better guitarist than Prince. IF so, then why didn't Dez become as big of a star as Prince.

I just looked up Bruce Springsteen Rolling Stone covers and not one of them has the E street band on them... (and there are like 10 Springsteen covers)

Co-Sign Dez may be a better guiartist but he does not have the chrisma and his constant complaining about being a born again Christian was not going to work in the Rock n Roll world and he wanted to be a Rock n Roll artist.

Also since he know owns a company that does marketing and branding he must know that women artist sell more records then guys. Prince was smart too start a girl group and work with women.

Are you forgetting that they worked for Prince? Prince was the name before the Revolution was formed. Without Prince, there would have been no Revolution. The Revolution were not the fvcking Rolling Stones--no matter how hard they worked or how much they contributed to the Minneapolis Sound. Prince still had the final say on image, songs, sound etc, Dez was not the Keith Richards to Prince's Mick Jagger. Andre and Prince in the early early days could be construed a bit more like Keith and Mick...but after that, it was Prince's band. PEriod.

justAmeda said:

I see Dez's point! If you read the book then you know Dez was in a relationship with high school sweetheart Becky who he married while he still was in the band after one of the tours. I would be willing to bet that Bobby Z, BrownMark, and let's take it back to even Andre when he was in the band all had their girlfriends/wives but none of them ever let their women come before the band. The fact that Prince did not show the band the same respect? yeah I'd have been very angry too.

"Typical blame the woman BS."
Thank you, Someone finally said it!

I still don't understand why the blame was placed on her. Dez implies she had Prince wrapped around her little finger and manipulated him just because he wanted to spend time with his lover and help her promote her career? He said, "I saw her position herself to the detriment and exclusion of the ones who were there before her" (as an aside, I think he's upset on Susan Moonsie's behalf as well..) but Prince was the one to pursue Vanity and used the line "I'll make you a star" as an enticement to have her in his life and girl group. It was Prince himself that "positioned her" in his life... (in all their lives) but yet Vanity gets the blame... Not fair.

BTW, excellent point on the E Street band not being on the cover of Rolling Stones with Bruce Spingsteen either.

Dez kept it real unlike a lot of what is being said since April 21, 2016....I would have been pissed too.

People are forgetting that Vanity was the first in a long line of females of questionable talent that Prince was cupcaking with to the detriment of band members. Dez couldn't have known at the time that this was going to become a pattern.

Dude worked his ass off for years and put up with all manner of eccentricites only to be upstaged by the first nice tail that came along.

And after all that she walked out on him reportedly because she wanted more money....for what I don't know. lol

So in the end Prince might have been better off rewarding Dez and the bands loyalty.

The same path is littered with the fallen projects of talented people like Rosie Gaines, Tamar and other people with genuine singing or playing ability. He wasted a lot of time promoting people like Bria, Vanity, Carmen and Mayte unfortunately.

But the thing is though, Vanity Six was a success for Prince... Vanity wasn't just some fly by night act that did nothing for him. Her name was linked to his for a reason. Still talked about for a reason. The impact they made collaborating helped to increase his legend back then. Helped to boost public exposure. Nasty Girl was huge. Made him money, Increased his status. You can't just count that out. She had a part in that. He scored big bringing her in his Purple Camp. She wasn't deadweight. She wasn't a waste of time. She did something for him. The others you've mentioned don't even come remotely close. Some could probably sing circles around her, but would they have been as successful? Whatever the case, she had what it took and she was a success for him, and that's what mattered in the scheme of things and Prince's Purple Kingdom at the time. [Edited 6/18/17 15:35pm]

If Jill Jones' Album was released in '84 or '85 instead of '87?? HELL YEAH!!! She was HOT AS HELL in the 1999 Video & woulda fit right in Vanity 6 or followed up RIGHT AFTER The Purple Rain Movie

I just finished reading Dez Dickerson's "My Time With Prince" and It was a nice read (apart from the blatant animosity towards Vanity that is....) Where better to get the official accounts of what happened in that era with Prince than from one of the person that actually lived it? No second and third hand accounts or hearsay... (like certain other books out there...) Dez had me laughing out loud with the way he went about telling some of the antics that took place in the Prince camp. He had me emotional when he talked about Big Chick's last year alive, knowing he was dying... But he had me stunned and annoyed when he blatantly blamed Vanity for being the major cause of separating Prince from him and the band! Talk about some serious animosity coming from Dez and the band towards her! Seriously...

.........

Having said all that. Does anyone else think Dez was justified in his irritation with Vanity? Was Vanity to blame or was Dez out of line for thinking Vanity had such a hold on Prince that she could manipulate him to the exclusion of his own Bandmates? I'll post my thoughts in the first post. [Edited 6/18/17 6:56am]

I think he is being a bit of a cry baby...and accusing her of being a Yoko Ono, when in reality Prince had other ladies on the side pimp2 whatever....and by the way that Rolling Stone Cover is Iconic nod

the way i see it from the revoultion anc backward they were all arrogant and thought they deserved so much u look at the people later in his life they like the npg he was with before his death they never spoke ill of any other people they were full of love and respresented that. brownmark saying he wrote kiss and ll that allt of stuff they are saying now they never spoke word of while he was alive and now they all talk as if prince was the protehe and they made him

To me it almost seems like they all feel his stardom should be their stardom.

Sorry, he was the star. Short of W&L, most of whose fans are Prince generated, none of them went on to be highly sought after commodities.

Prince was always the star, the one people wanted to be close to and the one whom drove the ship.

They all need to get over themselves

Because of their half-baked mistakes, we get ice cream, no cake; all lies, no truth; is it fair to Kill the YOUTH ~~ Party Up

I think he is being a bit of a cry baby...and accusing her of being a Yoko Ono, when in reality Prince had other ladies on the side pimp2 whatever....and by the way that Rolling Stone Cover is Iconic nod

Lol @ Yoko Ono... Dez didn't care about the other women because he didn't see them motivate Prince to do the things he was doing for Vanity. Vanity was the only one he was threatened by. He must of really thought she was another Yoko, lol. When he mentions that Vanity positioned herself to the detriment and exclusion of the ones who were there before her, I get the feeling he was outraged on behalf of Susan Moonsie also. I think he liked Susan for Prince (likewise Brenda Bennett and her husband Roy.) Dez talked about Susan being at his wedding with Prince, and that she was "Prince's companion" before Vanity showed up, so the statement "to the exclusion of the ones who were there before her" was loaded, and on behalf of Susan as well...

Whatever. Dez felt the way he felt, his reasoning doesn't seem unreasonable either.

When you're hurt, you can be unreasonable. Lashing out at Vanity, probably is an easier path to take than lashing out at Prince. Being in a band that's touring and helping him perform his dreams takes committment and "love" to do it. I could imagine back then, Prince did not spend time consoling the bands feelings. The tour and upcoming movie.

It was all for him and they're all still searching for how they fit in the story.
