^^^Yes, I don't think he was going to get married, but I think he wanted Susannah to stay, so he was doing the ring and the proposal, and flip-flopping, because he wanted her with him.

*

It's all in the song Forever In My Life, which he wrote for her.

I think Prince wanted all of his women to stay! If he could've had them all stay in the same house and get along so he could bounce from room to room, he would've!😂 I don't believe for one second that Susannah was any more special than Jill, Denise, Sheila, the ex-wives or any of the other ladies. Maybe because she was Wendy's twin, maybe, maybe not.😑

I agree with you on the "Prince wanted all of his women to stay" idea. I'm sure he would have preferred to keep all of them around in some capacity, although for different reasons. I do think that Susannah had both the deeper emotional and physical connection with him - not that it made him stop bedding the pretty side chicks - he could not resist them, but I think he needed Susannah in his life more than the others.

*

Again, I always go back to the songs, and the ones we know are for her are some of his best love songs. Listen to Forever In My Life again while reading the lyrics. He pours his heart out in that song, and the words are intense.

*

There comes a time, in every man's life
When he get's tired of fooling around
Juggling hearts in a three ring circus
Someday will drive a body down to the ground
I never imagined that love would rain on me
And make me want to settle down
Baby it's true, I think I do
And I just want to tell you that I wanna with you (baby, if you do too)
And baby if you do too
Forever, forever, baby I want you forever
I want to keep you for the rest of my life (you can make right)
All that is wrong in my world (you are my saviour)
You can make right (you are my light)
You are my saviour, you are my light (Forever I want you in my life)
Forever I want you in my life

*

There comes a road in every man's journey (don't be afraid)
A road that he's afraid to walk on his own (I'm at that road)
I'm here to tell you that I'm at that road (I'd rather walk it with)
And I'd rather walk it (you than walk it alone)
With you than walk it alone (you are my future)
You are my hero, you are my future (no past)
When I am with you, I have no past
Oh baby my one and only desire (make this feeling last)
Is find some way in this dog gone world (sugar it's true)
To make this feeling last (I know I do)
Oh baby it's true, I know I do (to with you)

*

I'm sorry but that is one intense love song. SOOOOOO good!! With just that drum beat and acoustic guitar when he played it live....one of my favorites for sure.

The other thing I want to add and remind that there is no real jockeying for position...
But there is a contigent of Prince fans, generally female, that have a harem mentality when it comes to Prince. They have always lived vicariously through their favorite woman in Prince's life, and feed the frenzie and craziness.

I didn't think so either, but I do believe he believed in it. Prince's musical life feed his personal life and his personal life fed his musical life. Post Purple Rain the Kid having learned from pain moved toward love 'Love is better than Sex....(Temptation) You have to want it for the right reason, and when you look at a large percentages of the songs via the Family, ATWIAD, Parade/Dream Factory, outtakes etc marrying, being in love, God love God, Heaven etc was very prominent even the whole premise of the movie UTCM was moving from a selfish love to a spiritual love, being transformed by love etc And I do believe he connected that aspect to Susannah, and it also was painted by the people in his camp

^^^ Yes, I agree with those thoughts. I think he unexpectedly met someone who brought him to a deeper emotional place , and who inspired him in other ways beside just the physical, but the physical aspect was deeper too. Of course, he couldn't - or wouldn't - stop the "temptation" side of it, so inevitably the relationship failed.

*

I think his inability to stop the hook-ups with women was similar to his constant need to make new music. Well, that and a very strong libido biggrin

I agree. The 80s women at least, they all represented something Prince desired. Some maybe less/more romantic(or sexual) than others but I think if he could he would have had them all in the camp.

There was never an Allison Mack person in Prince's life that would keep all the other women in line. He was polygamous but clearly not into having a cult like group of woman that worshipped him morning, noon and night. Given how many woman on this very site who would have gladly jointed his cult, should he have whipped one up, that says something. He was nutty but not deranged.

There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

Prince was a “player” who was able - I’m sure with the help of his mangers - to keep the women separate. He usually had a “main girlfriend” with him in MN, and a few other “side” women in other locations. He was the equivalent of a cheating boyfriend or spouse. The lack of smart technology helped him keep things quiet. I think his m/o would have been much more difficult to manage today.

It probably wouldn't matter today. People tend to not give a shit about non married cheating musicians unless it goes against their image.

But even Prince slowed down eventually. The days of him juggling several girlfriends were over when he passed.
A certain kind of mellow.

Yes, of course. He was not in great health the last couple of years before he passed, although it seems, from that 2015 RS interview, that some of the old mindset was still there. The reporter described his flirtatious late night phone call with the young female singer Delilah - I think that is her name. He did tell the journalist he was celibate though.

Prince was also married twice, and it seems he was most likely not monogamous during the marriages. But yes, famous musicians seem to get a “pass” with the cheating thing whether married or not. I guess it’s just considered typical behavior, so there is usually no shock or uproar with fans.
