Yes, it means Prince should have left a fucking WILL!

Exactly.Since he didn't leave a will, things aren't gonna go exactly as he would have wanted.

OK, so I was a bit of a dork and went through all of Prince's songs on Spotify and made a spreadsheet of the stream counts, to get a sense of what songs are popular and to see if there are any surprises. Here is a link so that you can have a look.

The top 50 most popular Prince songs (combining streams from different sources) have been:

[1] Purple Rain: 25291780
[2] Kiss: 24919273
[3] When Doves Cry: 17477021
[4] I Wanna Be Your Lover: 12319640
[5] Stare: 10075086
[6] Little Red Corvette: 10057228
[7] 1999: 9488914
[8] Raspberry Beret: 9399210
[9] Let's Go Crazy: 7158636
[10] I Would Die 4 U: 6805966
[11] Sign o' the Times: 3981413
[12] Cream: 3638503
[13] Diamonds and Pearls: 3314772
[14] U Got the Look: 2685220
[15] Nothing Compares 2 U: 2620466
[16] Gett Off: 2532092
[17] Funknroll: 2389694
[18] Darling Nikki: 2299445
[19] Controversy: 2112405
[20] U Know: 1973286
[21] Alphabet St.: 1916203
[22] The Beautiful Ones: 1908985
[23] Breakfast Can Wait: 1901186
[24] This Could Be Us: 1812824
[25] Breakdown: 1640117
[26] Sexy MF: 1596619
[27] Adore: 1571300
[28] Erotic City: 1548840
[29] If I Was Your Girlfriend: 1496769
[30] When You Were Mine: 1468289
[31] Take Me With U: 1437298
[32] Clouds: 1430134
[33] Thieves in the Temple: 1420419
[34] Pop Life: 1412503
[35] 7: 1404410
[36] Money Don't Matter 2 Night: 1397746
[37] Baby I'm a Star: 1390905
[38] I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man: 1363469
[39] Do Me, Baby: 1273098
[40] Delirious: 1179770
[41] Uptown: 1118625
[42] I Feel for You: 1094371
[43] Computer Blue: 1028574

[45] Art Offical Cage: 843677
[46] Sexy Dancer: 777163
[47] Dirty Mind: 760128
[48] The Gold Standard: 728744
[49] Sometimes It Snows in April: 689678
[50] Head: 685658

Some surprises:

More streams for "Nothing Compares 2 U" than songs like "Controversy" "Gett Off", and "Alphabet St.".

"The Beautiful Ones" and "Darling Nikki" outstreaming the single "Take Me With U"

"Erotic City" outstreaming some of the album tracks on Purple Rain, and "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" doubling the stream count of some songs on 1999, and "She's Always in My Hair" outstreaming almost all songs on Around the World in a Day

The weird disparity in the songs on Art Official Age, and that "Way Back Home" and "Affirmation III" are the least streamed from that album!

"Stare" with 10 million plus streams!

Wow! Interesting stat. Not surprised to see Purple Rain song at #1 and the other songs in the top 10 other than Stare, which surprised me 2 c at #5. Keep us updated!

I've been tracking the Prince followers on Spotify. Yesterday, there were over 116K and 2day, over 334K followers-- more than twice the followers from yesterday. We'll see how fast we get to a million followers! cool

artist development has been dead. streaming is great forr artists - it helps cut out the middle men. its nott perfect and everyone will not see the success chance the rapper has seen, but its a step in a good direction. the industry couldnt get it together

Most artist are not independent so they are getting killed on royalties because of streaming.

Chance was smart to go independent and notice how the music came up on him when he started talking about it.

right but tthats my point, streaming is enabling artists to not need the mainstream industry and over time, if trends stay going as they are, there will certainly be move waves of indy artists. distribution deals will become more of the norm than standard record deals.

I want CD's. I'm old school. But I finally caved and signed up for Tidal because I want his music that I don't have yet, before it disappears again. Still hoping for proper physical copies one day. I love getting a new record/cd. I love fighting with the packaging - it's so rewarding when you finally break that sucker open wink I love combing thru the booklets, reading every word, lingering over every picture. It's bliss. I love putting the disc in a player and not having to juggle my phone constantly, or freak out about a dead battery looming. I love ripping the tracks to my PC and having the freedom to add them to whatever devices I choose. But I digress.
Have you had your plus sign (+) today?

Spotify has a free version and a paid version. Try the free version first to see if you like it.

The main differences between them is the free one only lets you skip about 4 songs per day. And you have to listen to commercials every so often like on the radio.

But I advise anyone who is open to new music to download the app bacause what it does so well is let you explore the entire music spectrum instead of just what you already know and like.

You can create lists, and play those lists. For example one list can be only the slow Prince songs you like. Or it can be the entire Parade album. And another can be new songs you just encountered.

At first, like anything it may seem difficult because it's different. We all suffer from being scared of change. But if you give it a fair shot, the changed one is going to be you.

What's the difference? My Spotify tells me it's the 12" version and it sounds like it to me, although I haven't gone and compared them.

Eh what? Did you import your library into the Spotify app on your desktop maybe? I'm seeing the same problems as were always there on the digital catalogue for this album (wrong version of Kiss and a MASSIVE VOLUME JUMP on Girls & Boys) but nothing as odd as that.

If he had a will and willed his publishing to someone they could have turned around and sold it all. Having a will means it is being left in the hands of the person you want it left in. It does not stop that person from doing what they want with property. If he had will this music could have still ended up on streaming platforms. I also think some of you think Prince had something against streaming he did not he just wanted to be compensated. I hope you also understand that when this deal ends his family members can take this stuff off.

What I want to know is.. when will the Prince penned tracks reappear on albums from other artists? For example I Feel For You is not accessible on the Chaka Khan 1984 album and there are other numerous examples..

I was referring to Spotify users with a so-called "free" account - who are forced to listen to commercials in between those crappy mp3s. Not exactly "free", is it.

Prince is dead. No one knows what he would have was decided was important this week if he was alive and had struck the right deal. He might have found some chick on youtube to do his deals for him.The best they can do now is treat it as professionally as possible, they can't put on a gig to raise money everytime it was needed like he could.

Maximum exposure. Contemporary Bach fans would not have been happy had his remaining unheard material been consigned to the dustbin. But for Mendelssohn and a few others, that would have remained their fate. And actually, when you think about it, the digital avenues are the perfect way to release as much new P material as possible. Restricted to CD release only, it would be a very slow trickle process, based more on profit/loss than other considerations.

Right, I'm off to make a brew.

Well radio is the same kind of free, and so is traditional television and we call that free. And the quality is better than both. You can even go to settings and get higher quality if you like.

The punt being, yes you can watch something on IMAX and it will look better than your big screen Tv(thought those new 4K TBD are pretty good) and you can find a nice quiet room and put a hi fi stereo in it.

Point being, your snobbery misguided. People listen in headphones in a noisy gym, in a noisy car, in a noisy work place, mass transit and in a noisy living room. All while wearing headphones mostly.
And if you do have a nice home theater set-up at home like I do, most tv's support Spotify and all the streaming services and they sound great.

And lastly, depending on how old you are, your hearing is not the best anymore probably couldn't couldn't hear what you snob about anyhow.

How old are you? It's natural to lose your hearing. Especially what types of work and concerts going habits.

When was the last time your hearing was checked? Unless you are a teen or young adult who has really protected your hearing, I bet it's not as good as you think.

I've seen videos where snobs with expensive gear are easily fooled into buying expensive gear with gold plated connections only to see they can't tell the difference between a cheap set-up under prime controled conditions much less under real-world conditions.
lol
