PRIDE & the PASSION

In a flash, he caught her eye

He was everything she was lookin' 4
He had big cash and a Brando smile
He was pretty easy 2 adore
She tried her luck, huh, I mean she played the man
She sho'nuff thought she could turn him on
But she got (stuck) stuck when he kissed her hand
And told her that he wanted 2 take her home

Pride and the passion
Laugh all night, cry all day
If true love is old-fashioned
Should we pass or should we play?

In a flash, her life had changed (Life had changed)
Everything she feared was put on trial (Everything was put on trial)
Priorities rearranged (Rearranged)
She said she had 2 have him 4 a little while
And if he's good, he can teach her things (He can teach her things)
Things about herself that she never knew
And if he's the one, the shining armor knight
Think of all the dirty things they could do

CHORUS:
Pride and the passion
Laugh all night, cry all day
Cuz if true love is old-fashioned
Should we pass or should we play?
What's it gonna be?
The pride or the passion, passion, passion?

In a flash, she took a chance
She let him take her 2 his crib
Music played, they started 2 dance
She said she really dug his ad-lib
What went down I don't wanna say (I don't wanna say)
Destiny is yours, don't let it fool ya
And if U're wrong, expect a massive drag
If U're right, more power 2 ya

CHORUS {x2}

Pride, pride and the passion
Pride and the passion, ooh
The pride and the passion
Oh, pride and the passion

Original artwork drawn by Elizabeth Moore for Sheila E.'s 29th birthday party, with the image measuring 6.5 x 3.5 on a 16 x 13 sheet, portraying two medieval musicians on a checkerboard floor; the embellishments in the corners and center are on a celluloid overlay. Signed and dated in the lower right by the artist. Matted to an overall size of 21 x 18. In fine condition, with some portions of staining to lower blank portion and a fold to lower right corner of celluloid. Accompanied by two copies of the corresponding invitation that used this artwork, which has details for the party on the reverse: "A Birthday for Sheila E., You & one guest are invited to the celebration at: 'Vertigo,' 1924 S. Grand, downtown L.A. at the corner of Olympic, Thursday December 11, 1986, 9:00 P.M., (please present this invitation at the door)." From the collection of El...rovenance. Moore worked for Prince on the Purple Rain Tour as his personal wardrobe assistant, as well as event designer and decorator; she also worked intimately with Prince designing and creating original artwork for his party invitations and personal holiday cards.

Raphael and Tim and other people from my band like Carl Wheeler were playing with Sheila E. I was able to introduce them to Sheila through a good friend of mine named Levi Seacer. He was a great guitarist from Richmond, California, and he was the musical director for Sheila E. He told me one day, “Hey, man. She needs a bass player. She needs someone who can move with the bass, sing a little bit, a...nd dance, too.” I replied, “Well, my little brother can.” He was eighteen or nineteen back then. Levi asked, “Can he really play?” I said, “Hell yeah! He can play.” So I took him to the tryouts, and he made it. They called and said that they needed a drummer too. So, Tim came and he made it as well. This was long before we started the group Tony! Toni! Toné!

Download all the shit hop that you can for your kids, neices, nephews, and their friends also. That will prevent them from going out and buying it and will prevent some shit hop sales. Every little bit helps - Andy

Richie, Sheila E. Dazzle Crowd

The last time Lionel Richie played the Myriad January 1984 Sheila E. was only noticed in passing: "On percussion, Sheila Escovito," he announced.

She almost stole the show that winter night by slapping bass on "All Night Long," the encore.

Friday night, however, Sheila E. returned to Oklahoma City a star, turning in a sensational warmup performance for Lionel Richie in one of the Myriad's best live draws since Stevie Wonder's knockout performance Aug. 10.

Standout selections from Sheila E's set included "Sister Fate," "Bedtime Story," Prince's "Love Bizarre" and her encore, "Glamorous Life."

Sheila stole the show not only with her singing and drop-dead looks but with her sensational percussion work. Overall, her performance left a large Oklahoma City audience demanding an encore.

After intermission, Richie's Yamaha grand piano rose from the stage on a hydraulic pedestal, as invisible hands clinked out the notes to the haunting ballad "Hello."

Not a soul was on stage.

Lionel's voice was heard, almost drowned by the delerious screams of about 11,000 frothy concertgoers.

Richie took the stage through a trap door apparatus, bringing the shrill welcome to the absolute limit of aural endurance. The crowd remained enraptured _and vocal for the duration of his two-hour set.

He kicked off the concert with "All Night Long," the festive danceable which closed his show two and a half years ago at the Myriad.

The song, a showstopper, brought the house to its feet in record time.

Rarely is an audience as enthusiastic as this one. The crowd was part of the show, adding an extra edge of adrenalin to an already exciting entertainment package.

Concerts don't come any better than this. It was a happening. An event. A healing.

Outstanding early selections in the 18-song set included "Easy," "Running With the Night," "Three Times a Lady," "You Are the Sun, You Are the Rain," and the Academy Award-winning "Say You, Say Me."

The stage, wide as a hockey rink, rose up to elevate the singer some 20 feet above the crowd for "Say You, Say Me." Other times sections would divide, rise up to reveal banks of headlights, et cetera. It was the last word in concert staging and lighting.

Video images of the country group Alabama joined Richie for the new "Deep River Woman," much as Diana Ross' flickering electronic image duetted with Richie in 1984 on "Endless Love." It's still a pretty bizarre trick.

Sheila E. returned to the stage for Steve Winwood's current hit, "Higher Love."

Richie continued his nonstop hit parade with "Penny Lover," "Lady" (a hit for Kenny Rogers) and "Still."

A costume change found Richie in a dayglo orange suit for the final portion of the show, capped with "Dancing on the Ceiling." Although Richie didn't dance on the ceiling, several of his band members did, nonetheless, dangle from wire cables.

SHEILA: I was performing with my band, opening for Lionel Richie at the time. I told Prince, management and everyone else that I was tired of being a solo artist. I wanted to take a break. I just wanted to play as a musician and not have the responsibility of being a solo artist, because I had hit a wall. I was done for a minute. I just wanted to stop for a while, go play some other music and just play drums and percussion. So he said, “Oh, okay. Well, I’m gonna disband my band, so you wanna come play with me?” And I was like, “Oh, cool.”
So when I disbanded my band, I’d brought with me Boni Boyer, Miko Weaver and Levi Seacer. And the other half of that band ended up starting their own band: Tony Toni Toné. The process for Prince was really just putting together music, and the idea of a line-up of songs for the show.
But since I recorded with him most of the time, I knew where all the tracks were. Back in that time, you know, we recorded on tape!

ESSENCE: Around the making of Sheila E, your third record on Prince’s label, you said you wanted to take a break. Did you have that feeling while making that album? Was it a contractual obligation?
SHEILA: Nah. I just wanted to do something different. So even the approach of what we were doing was different. Writing with different people, and incorporating more writing with my band members as well, because they were very talented.
