Chris Moon explains how and why Prince made purple his colour

'WHY PURPLE?

When I first started working with Prince, I was also running the recording studio at Campbell-Mithun the largest ad agency in MN. They had many very large national and International clients and I would learn how advertising campaigns and product image was developed by watching the ad execs develop them.

In the process, I sat in on a color review meeting one week when the ad agency worked on selecting a single color for a new company image and this is when learned how color was used in advertising.I shared this story with Prince when I was working to develop his image for him and explained how linking a color to a product or artist created another way for the audience to identify them.

We had gone through a lengthy process of settling on his name (another story for another day) so during one of the next steps in the marketing and packaging process I proposed to Prince this idea of picking a color for his identity. I suggested the one we should use for him be Purple as it was a color directly associated with royalty which would help cement the Prince name in the minds of fans. I told him if we always used purple on everything associated with him, then as an artist eventually he would own that color and no other artist could use it without it reminding the audience of Prince ... that it would be HIS color. He liked the idea and he liked the color purple so we agreed from that point on this would be HIS color.'

Lots or people taking credit for Prince’s ideas lately. Purple was not even associated with Prince until the the 1999 album, which was long after Moon was gone.

Sorry, not true. Always do your homework first...

.

Leaving 4 New York(1977 demo), gives us a glimpse of the beginings of ideas found throught his career

.

Purple and the Dawn

Sitting there on the purple lawn
U've been there since dawn
Wonderin' why I've gone
And 4 just 2 long

.

as well on the Prince album his name is scripted in Purple and song titles

.

And he was wearing purple toned trenches way before 1999(1982)

also purple lighting was being used very early in his shows by Dirty Mind

Lavendar and Fuschia being offshoots of Purple too

Prince can learn stuff too. Especially when you're young.
I think you forget the homage paid to Moon by Prince at the beginning of UTCM (the "C" in the crescent).
Prince was not one to forget where he was coming from.

Heck, it's like he built Paisley Park to recreate the constant, full immersion he had at Moon Sound
during his formative years months. Did you hear the crazy shit he was already capable of (76-77 demos)?
You don't get that good so fast, unless you eat, work, and sleep to music.
Like, sleeping in the studio.
Or at least not too far from the console.
In Prince's last years, that had become litterally it.

Judging by his Wikipedia page, Christopher Moon was a hell of a worker at a young age
and built his own studio. Two things that apparently impressed a young Prince enough
to make them his own life ethics and dreams/goals. Bernadette was the lady, but without Moon Studio free time, who knows?
Without the freedom of twisting the knobs yourself and learn multitracking?
We would probably have gotten "Composed, Performed, and Arranged by Prince". Something would miss.
So don't block the Moonshine, shady.

Prince knew how to surround himself by smart people (you don't get the three disc million dollar contract by whooping your ass). I think it's a tad insulting to Prince to consider he surrounded himself with semi-competent folks, on the basis they were there "by accident". They all shaped him (heck, even audiences did), men and women.
Praise should be given to those who knew how to deal with an hypersensitive like Prince.
Moon gave him the keys. Because he knew there was talent. Like it or not, he offered us Prince as we know him.
Don't misunderstand me: Prince made himself. But a ladder always has a first step.

Moon and Husney were a perfect launch ramp, they didn't waste a day. They gave him a three-floor ladder, right off the bat.
They deserve to tell tales. Prince always absorbed a great deal, all his life. He was The Great Absorber.
He knew he had to wait to be killer enough before he could claim "royalty" without risking ridicule,
but that was a heck of an objective to implant in a teenager,
and something maybe seen as an omen ("Aw Lawd, why my first name?") by Prince himself.

And we can hear, early eighties Prince becoming musically fiercer with each album (and on stage, s'il-vous-plaît), until he senses he's capable — heck, until he's certain he kicks some ass, enough to go "Full Royal".

To say that all Prince's Purple Rain vision was implanted by Chris Moon would be a fallacy.
But we need this kind of first row, first steps testimonies to remember Prince also as starting his life,
and not knowing much and learning, like anyone else.

Moon also captured the last Pegasus alive (alas soft, ill, and old — the initial idea for the session was to shoot a trailer for a secret Prince-penned blaxploitation pr0n lo-fi movie called "Horny Pony vs. Purple Pussy" and use the equine animal as a prop ; when U gotta eat U gotta eat, man) just in time for the Prince album back sleeve shot.

This sordid species-extinction hunt was paid for by none than "Dirthiest Howie" Husney,
a louche Uptown bearded manager who frequented colored people and that wouldn't sit. Sit! He wouldn't.

Deprived from fresh air, the chicken-horse soon got worse, and as Ol' Peggie departed, she whispered:
"We had fun, didn't we?" "I'm doing horse" "Yee-pee-ka-yay, mothafuckazzz..."

"... And let their names be vanished 4ever from all books that carrieth my name.
Wait, no, I didn't say burn all the books with 'Victor' in it, you dumb ass. Books about cymbals? What cymbals?
Who got you promoted? God, what's in an army? OK, I quit."

No reason to doubt Chris Moon really. Seems without his entry onto the scene and partnership with Prince it may have been a much longer wait to hear a Prince record, if at all. He is clearly the push that was needed to get the recording ball rolling for him. Everyone needs someone to help them get started, espeically a 16yr old kid from MN. The purple accents may have been subtle early on, but they were there. Everything about Prince's image and style was "created" for each release. So, this makes complete sense.

Should have fully read your post before writing mine a few later! Yes, Moon and Husney are a key component to the beginnings of his "royal reign" just a few years later.

*

I will say though, if the story is true that Prince made the choice to stay behind in Moon's studio while Andre and gang left for an ice cream break - it was probably one of the smartest moves he made back then smile

they could have picked any color for his name on the Prince album(and song titles) but it is easily understandable why Purple was the choice.

I remember one told by Gayle Chapman, of coming over to Prince's house and he had some exotic woman in his basement taking pictures of her with no top on in his jacket. And how he was using this stuff to craft his own style and look

That's funny - I had mentioned that story from Gayle in another thread. Someone had said that they thought Vanity had inspired him to do films, but I remembered that quote from Gayle, and also his idea for The Second Coming, which I think pre-dated Vanity as well. In the song The Good Life he also wrote about going to see old movies when he was a kid as an escape instead of using drugs.

He definitely took ideas and inspiration from people, places and things around him throughout his career. It was how he used those things for his image, music, and performances that made him such a genius.

Yeah I believe I read it in a WAXPOETICS book or something.
Right Prince wanted to do with 2nd Coming film prior to meeting Vanity, when it was still the Hookers:Susan Kim and Jamie

.

He loved movies, and can easily see why he wanted to make them. Blade Runner influenced the 1999/Purple Rain years. I love Blade Runner. He loved the 1930-1950s hollywood films too

Yes, he mentions the 30's and 40's movies in The Good Life:

*

Everyday, after school
You know where to find this brother
Uptown, at every movie show
Outta my life, to another

hat was the only thing that I wanted to do
That was my drug of choice
Left all the funny smellin' cigarettes
To the American boys

'La Dolce Vita', was the knob that turned me on
Marcello Mastroianni's Italian Mac comin' on strong

Sweat and/or body hair aside.....that man really had an exceptional ass. However, the way he dressed and displayed it definitely improved through the years biggrin

There someting odd about seing him in that ass picture being a normal weight and not super thin. It makes you realize how sickly or almost too thin at times in the later years his body appeared.

Yeah I believe I read it in a WAXPOETICS book or something.
Right Prince wanted to do with 2nd Coming film prior to meeting Vanity, when it was still the Hookers:Susan Kim and Jamie

.

He loved movies, and can easily see why he wanted to make them. Blade Runner influenced the 1999/Purple Rain years. I love Blade Runner. He loved the 1930-1950s hollywood films too

Yes, he mentions the 30's and 40's movies in The Good Life:

*

Everyday, after school
You know where to find this brother
Uptown, at every movie show
Outta my life, to another

hat was the only thing that I wanted to do
That was my drug of choice
Left all the funny smellin' cigarettes
To the American boys

'La Dolce Vita', was the knob that turned me on
Marcello Mastroianni's Italian Mac comin' on strong
He had all the honeys, the kind from the magazines
Small waist, big-right, biggest ones you've ever seen

La Dolce Vita was released in 1960 - but okay. lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
