Unreleased 1991 Greatest Hits album w/ The Black Album

1991 release project

A release for "The Black Album" was planned by Warner Bros. in 1991 as the second disc of a planned greatest hits package (following the relative commercial disappointment of Graffiti Bridge), but when Prince submitted Diamonds And Pearls, the planned greatest hits package was discarded.

Do we know anymore about this intended project? Or where this information has been sourced from?

.

What's more to know? Warners planned a (long overdue) GH, using TBA as an incentive for fans to buy songs they already owned. Source of the info is Uptown's research AFAIK.

Hi Bluegangsta,

I’m afraid I can’t help you with the source. However I’ve always assumed that whatever WB had planned for this greatest hits album turned into the promo CD ‘The Crown Jewels’ from early ‘92. Given the time it surfaced and the predominantly black artwork I imagine that the intended release probably would have been this promo CD as disc 1 and the Black LP as disc 2. Just speculation on my part, but still.

^Interesting speculation! although Warners did put out a few promo compilations on tape that followed a similar theme (The story so far, sounds of the times, eye love prince, nothing compares to him) and the Crown Jewels falls neatly in that pattern smile
