It has definitely reached a MUST album status. It still sells better than many contemporary artists do.

PURPLE RAIN needs to be receritified!!! Why is it still stuck at 13x Platinum last certified by RIAA in 1996.

But it's only certified 13x Platinum by RIAA.

WB gave The Revolution their 13x Platinum plaques during the Purple Rain Super Deluxe release.

Should be certified 16x Platinum by now.

1999' sales history in the US :
.
January 1983 : 0.5 Million (RIAA)
May 1983 : 1 million (RIAA)
July 1984 : 2.5 millions ( Variety)
July 1985 : 3 millions ( RIAA)
.
September 1992 : 5 millions worldwide, so about 3.5 M in the US
March 1999 : 4 millions in the US ( RIAA) so an average of 70k/ a year.
This last certification was supposed to take into account music club sales.
.
Between 1991 and 2005 : 640.000 copies sold in store ( Nielsen SoundScan), so an average of 42k ex./ a year, but with a big boost in 1998/99 with the re-release of the single.
So by January 2006: 4.3 millions sold in the US
.
Between 2006 and 20, April 2016 : 153.000 copies sold, so an average of 15k/ a year.
2016 : 165.000 copies sold (!)
Between 2017 and 2019 : 60.000 copies sold, so an average of 20k/a year
.
US total sales : 4.7 millions.
Far from the chartmaster estimations who put 1999 at 5.7 millions in the US.
It would take now another 15 years (!) at this cruisade speed, to reach the 5 millions mark...
.
But a 5*Platinum could be reached soon with streaming added.

I agree, I believe charmasters is a little too high, but I also believe it is just under 5 million in USA, and with the recent reissues, etc... should be at million soon.

Knowing all the figures and sales I posted above, it is obvious Chartmaster added more than 800.000 sales in the US that never existed.
This is not the only album where he exxagerated US sales.

Knowing the physical market is decreasing year after year, I highly doubt it.
But maybe in less than 5 years, with streaming added, it could reach that 5 million mark.
.
But WB doesn't certify its albums anymore for years, Prince is not an isolated case.

Do you have the sales for The Very Best Of Prince... That should be over 3 million by now in USA, but only stands at 1 million by RIAA.

TVBOP sales in the USA:
.
2001/2009 : 1.650.000 copies scanned
2010/2019 : 1.270.000
Total sold in stores : 2.920.000
.
Maybe it sold a little something in the music club between 2001/2004, but who knows?
Maybe it would allow it to reach the magical 3 millions in pure sales.
.
By the way, in 2016 alone TVBoP generated an extra 500.000 " sales" With streaming ( at the time only Tidal!). As of now, maybe it generated an extra 100.000 "sales" Since then.
.
So now that RIAA officially count streaming in certifications, TVBOP is T 3.5 millions ( sales + streaming), so it could be recertified at 3*Platinum for sure.

Since there is a debate whether or not Prince sold over 100 million albums; we might remember that USA for Africa(we are the world) Album sold 20 million. Prince had a song on that album which gives prince 20 million more in sales.

When 3121 was released, Prince sold already 100 millions albums.
There is no debate here.
.
But no the We Are The World album sold "only" 3/4 millions in the US and wasn't a success everywhere ( it reached only #31 in the UK)
